Frontline

A quasi-experimental evaluation of the impact of an innovative training programme for social workers

About

Project lead: Michael Little, PhD and Georgina Warner, PhD

Frontline is a charity with the mission to transform the lives of vulnerable children by recruiting and developing outstanding individuals to be leaders in social work.

The DSRU has been commissioned to conduct an impact evaluation of the Frontline training programme, which has provided an opportunity to evaluate the impact of social work more widely.

Our role

The DSRU has worked with social work professionals, academics and families to develop a logic model of social work and establish a framework of outcomes to be utilised in an evaluation assessing the impact of social work on outcomes for families. The case files of over 200 children were assessed to consider the key presenting issues that social workers help families to overcome and around 20 social workers were interviewed to assess the feasibility of the study design.

The evaluation will explore the overall impact of social work as well as the influence of social worker level of experience and training route. As part of the project, the DSRU has developed a mobile device application (app) to enable social workers and families to independently respond to research questions. The research process will be embedded into everyday social work practice and will enable local authorities to assess an innovative way of engaging families in research and gaining rich data on family outcomes.
